Four Tips to Create the Perfect Sleeping Environment

How much sleep you need to get each night changes throughout your lifetime. Unfortunately, most of us don’t get enough sleep, no matter what our age. Although there are situations that are out of our control, many of us are sabotaging our efforts to get more shuteye and we don’t even know it.

If you want to wake up feeling rejuvenated, you need to do a little work to turn your bedroom into an oasis. Here are four tips that will help you create the kind of environment that allows you to get as much sleep as possible.

Hang Blackout Blinds

It is important to keep your room dark. Most people think of hanging blackout curtains, and although they are better than nothing, they don’t always keep your room as dark as you’d like. Not only are some curtains flimsy enough to let light in, light will seep in around the edges of the curtain.

Hang blackout blinds instead! They can be just as, if not more, stylish than curtains, but they also do a better job of keeping the sunlight from seeping in during the early hours of the morning. When properly fitted to your window, they allow no sunlight to infiltrate the bedroom at all.

Get Rid of the TV

It may sound relaxing to curl up in bed and watch a movie, but having the TV in the bedroom is a big mistake. Not only will it distract you from getting as much sleep as you should, it can keep you from getting enough sleep even after you turn it off. That’s because the blue light from screens can keep your brain wired even when it’s time to close your eyes.

Don’t put a TV in your bedroom. While you’re at it, keep the electronics out altogether and you’ll sleep more soundly.

Pimp out Your Bed

Don’t forget about your bed! You don’t have to buy a new one either. There are plenty of things you can do to make your bed more comfortable including:

  • Choose soft sheets and change them out often
  • Add a mattress topper
  • Get new pillows
  • Cover your pillows with silk pillow cases
  • Use a heated blanket on chilly nights
  • Store your linens with lavender sachets

Minimize Distractions in the Bedroom

This tip harkens back to our earlier tip about getting rid of the TV in the bedroom, but it isn’t just the TV that can distract you when it’s time to sleep.

Keep your bedroom relatively tidy so you aren’t worried about that pile of laundry in the corner when you’re trying to drift off to sleep. Keep work, including laptops, out of the bedroom and don’t let stuff pile up on your end table that can go crashing to the floor in the middle of the night.

Sleep doesn’t have to be elusive. It just requires your attention! With these tips, you’ll find yourself drifting off to sleep faster and you’ll stay asleep for longer.
